A three-panel motif displays scenes from the Nibelungen Lied, an ancient Germanic warrior saga, written anonymously in 1200 A.D. The left panel portrays the hero Siegfried's battle with a dragon. In the center of the stein, Siegfried is ambushed and slain by Hagen. The right panel shows Hagen sinking Siegfried's treasures in the River Rhein.
